Other children would frequently beat me up when I went outside, or the neighbors would loudly gossip about how my mother shouldn't have given birth to me, if I was going to be an existence that embarrassed them like this. Even my father used to tell me that no one would want me around in comparison to other people, because my lack of an eye made me less useful than those with two eyes.
[An old memory comes to mind, remembering his initial excitement as a child thinking that he could use this chance to help other people with eye problems if he became an opthamologist... before his father shut it down by saying no one would hire a doctor with only one eye for that, sparking another fight between him and his mother.]
The only person who treated me kindly was my mother... but even then, she was very unhappy with it, constantly fighting with my father and other neighbors for their treatment of me, and being seen as a pariah by those blaming her as if it was somehow her fault as well that I was born with only one eye.
People are cruel. Particularly children. But your father saying such is inexcusable.

Come to think of it, aside from that, I don't really remember much about him. I don't think I can even recall what he looks like now--what I do remember, aside from his words, is that he eventually left my mother and I and never came back, so in the end it is probably for the best that I don't have any memories of him worth reflecting upon. Even if, by comparison, my mother didn't take his disappearance as well as I did... in fact, she became very sick as a result of it.
[Danny can't exactly stop him from doing that given that moving that arm causes an undesirable amount of pain, so he allows it, even if Danny still doesn't seem to think that an apology is warranted: it is what it is, after all.]
It wasn't really that bad though, at first. I mean... even if my mother didn't talk to me, she was someone who would still look at me when no one else would, at least. In that regard, I couldn't help but wonder if maybe everyone was just jealous, that they didn't have beautiful eyes like hers, and that I would be gifted with at least one of them, let alone any.
[... Granted, his mother was in a serious depression and it's debatable if she ever looked at him so much as "happened to be staring at the spot he was standing in", but Danny doesn't care. He still loved her no matter what...]
... She's dead now, though. Committed suicide not too long after, so I guess in the end it wasn't enough. [Danny wasn't enough.] My eye killed her, in a way, as I'm certain that this series of misfortunes would not have happened for her if I had been normal.
[Or maybe not even born at all. A lot of people would probably still be alive in that scenario as well.]
[It's an awful story of a family torn apart by circumstances outside of anyone's control. A sad story made sadder by the way Danny says 'it wasn't that bad'.]
