[Good on you for not enabling his caffeine addiction.

The water definitely helps though once Grimm gets back as Danny didn't realize just how thirsty he actually was until the water was in his hands. He really should be more attentive about that sort of thing, but since when did Danny care about his own needs am I right.]

[You're right and I hate it.

Grimm takes a seat next to Danny, sipping his own water.]

Of course. It is the least I can do for a friend.

[Danny has already drained half of his water in the moment it was handed to him, but upon hearing Gray's words, there's a moment where he stares into his glass rather contemplative before he smiles. One that actually leans more genuine than his usual fake smiles.]

I'm glad to hear that... to be honest, and maybe I'm just feeling weirdly sentimental, but I kind of wish that you had been in my world. Things might have been different if I had a friend like you there.

[Because his "friends" back home were fellow serial killers who you can't trust as far as you can throw them. Having an actual friend could have possibly prevented a lot of trouble, really.]

[cannot believe you confused him with your other crush whose name starts with Gr]

What's happened has happened. All we can do is support each other going forward.

[... I can't believe I didn't notice I typed that mistake until now oh my god.]

[He sets his water down for a moment before he leans back against the couch.]

You mentioned that your child was happier that it was getting warmer out, but I failed to ask where they were right now. Are they at home or out somewhere?

They are with the Knight. We trade who they stay with between weeks.

[Wouldn't do to take them away from their other parent.]

Ah, I see. I haven't spoken to them much, but they seem like a nice sort.

[So did the Hollow Knight and Hornet too, for the amount of time he spoke to them. Grimm's pretty lucky having such good friends from home here too, in that regard.]

Indeed. I am glad they are able to live a peaceful life here.

[doctorize]

[There's a pause, as a thought occurs to him.]

Aside from them, do you think there's anyone else from home that you would like to have here too?

[hagrides]

Brumm, my troupe's musician. I do miss him dearly.

[...he's a little sad about not being able to share the few remaining months of his life with Brumm.]

[Maybe don't tell Danny about your short lifespan or he might actually get upset about that.]

Oh? He must be a very good friend, then.

[... Totally not going to be jealous thinking that, it's fine. This is fine.]

He is. Better than he should be, really. It would save him a great deal of pain if he cared less for me.

[too late we're going to have this discussion]

...There is a Ritual. The passing of the Nightmare King's flame from one vessel to the next. My own flame will burn out, and my child will live on.

I have long accepted it as the fate of all who bear the name 'Grimm'. Brumm has not.

[doctorize]

[Oh.]

Why? I mean... is it really necessary for you to die just to pass a title like that on to another?

[hagrides]

It is more than a title. It is the divine essence that allows any Grimm to live. Without it, my child will die in my place.

[And he cannot allow that.]

[doctorize]

But...

[He hesitates, caught off guard by how much that genuinely bothers him on some level, before he tries again.]

That sort of ritual doesn't have to take place here, does it? It might not even work if attempted in a place like this.

[hagrides]

It does not. Rest assured that my end will not occur until I return home.

[It's just that when he does, that end is in a matter of days, or perhaps even hours.]

[doctorize]

Oh.

[Then why go home at all? Why not find a way to just stay here forever?

... But, he doesn't voice that. Danny may not want to go back home to die and can't see why anyone else would accept that kind of fate, but he doesn't want to give away that's where his own thoughts are at here.]

Ah, it's alright... [Or, well, it's not, but--] I did ask for details didn't I?

So you did. And perhaps I could have found a better time to tell you.

[Danny's already having a rough go of it without bringing Grimm's impending death into the situation.]

Is there ever such a thing as a good time to talk about something like that?

[hagrides]

I suppose not. But it is... painful, I feel, to cause someone dear to me pain through my own destined fate.

[He has no say in it, but he still feels like he's at fault.]
